New comics! My best friend Josh wrote a comic and I begged him to draw it. He’s a brilliant comedian and has gotten incredible at stand-up. We’re going to make more great comics, even with the entire length of this country keeping us apart.

Comedy! Magazines! RE:COM published its sixth issue, available now right here. This is the illustration I did for a column by Jonas Polsky, teaching you how to become a better heckler. It was a fun article, total tongue-in-cheek, but I got to do a cool ninja drawing nonetheless. The challenge I find with doing illustrations for stand-up is trying to find an angle that is more than just a comedian and a microphone. Thanks to my art director and editor Kristy Mangel for the spot!

Nick Kroll’s KROLL SHOW premieres tonight on Comedy Central! I love Kroll a lot, I especially liked his stand up special Thank You Very Cool. So much that I did an illustration of three of my fave characters of him. Now that he’s got his own sketch show, I had to repost this.

Oh my goodness! This was in my queue and I meant to write something for it. But then life took over and AAAGH!

I did a bunch of these animals while at the Museum of Natural History with two of my best friends Kate and Lauren. I love going and sketching with them. Just good company, fun stuff to look at, and then usually a meal and good conversation after. That, really, is all I need in life. I love going, all three of us lined up on a bench, using different materials, drawing in different styles, and having pedestrians walk by, stop and talk with the three of us together. It’s a great icebreaker to talk to people you would normally not talk to. We love getting old ladies chattin’ and cracking jokes, too.

And now that the Theodore Roosevelt Room of North American Animals opened back up (it was closed ALL summer!), we’ve got to go and get another sketching trip out of it.

Hello! Back and blogging once again with some more drawings. I’ve been in this sketch writing class churning out mediocre scripts to a class full of very funny New Yorkers. I’ve been going to a ton of sketch shows on Monday nights. The funny thing is that I do love sketch, but when the show is over, there’s a stand-up show right after. And I can’t get over how much stand-up is better than sketch. At least for me. Stand-up is so honest, truthful, and invites a laughter that connects me more to the performer. I love personal stories, observations, and sketch lacks that humanity from a great stand-up set. I am trying my hardest to fall in love with sketch, but it can’t compare.

I’m ending 2012 well. One year ago, I dreamed of being where I am now. But the creative soul is never satisfied. The Asian inside me wants more. I just want to be happy with what I have, but I crave something else that I don’t know exists. Is it a thing? A person? An idea? A moment? I yearn! But maybe all it is, is a yearning to move forward.

In other news, I went to a party that had so many white people in it. It was so white that I was the only black person there.

Doing comedy in NY is super tough, but thats because there’s so much talent. Some guys I know host a weekly show in Williamsburg with some amazing talent from all over the city. And they are just getting bigger! If you’re in town, I’ll be here and we can watch these guys together.

I’ve shown a breakdown. The pencil stage is usually pretty boring, because most of the drawing happens in the inks. Then theres the inks cleaned up, and final colors. Each illustration I do, I get closer to understanding color. And now I can draw with colors in mind. Enjoy, and come laugh with me.

Yes. I keep posting to my stupid other tumblr when i mean to post here. I hate myself.

One of my new favorite blogs Style Girlfriend features two illustration of mine! I love reading her blog because its about menswear from a girl’s perspective. Unlike how women dress to impress other women, I am a men that dresses to impress girls, and her advice is all I need. Its been kind of a crazy couple of weeks. I had to retreat this weekend because I was so overwhelmed by it all. New York Comic Con came and went, and it was ridiculous. I go tot reconnect with college professors and other SCAD alums. I found a group of guys to hang with! I havent had one since my college days. Just a bunch of dillhole guys eating pizza on the street, one of my fave things in the world. After months of just hanging out with girls all the time, its ridiculously fun just to be in a group of dudes and being obnoxiously loud, inappropriate, and all-around boyish in public. Seriously, there’s a reason groups of pretty girls get bored with themselves; guys of all types are just entertaining to be around.

Looking forward to:
-My new sketch writing class has a variety of seasoned writers and performers (from The Onion, One Tree Hill, etc, wtf!). I feel so odd being the comic book illustrator in it, but hopefully I can keep up with these guys.
-Louis CK with my best brother
-It’s been almost 6 months since my friend Kate joined comiXology, so I’m looking to celebrate with her over dinner!
-…and of course, November 1st-4th. GAH!

I’m trying some stuff out, changing orientations, overlapping. You know, like an artist does. Experiments!

Not much to say otherwise. Only thing really related to the sketchbook is another girl saw me drawing on the subway. Very pretty, distinctive front gap in her teeth, but looks good on her. Turns out she’s an actress in NY, has starred in some College Humor videos, and is going to be in some upcoming Homeland episodes. And she wanted to get in contact with me for a future collaboration/project/hush hush whatever thing she wants to do. I’m all for the hush hush, as exemplified by me blogging about it right here and now.

And in unrelated sketchbook news, just doing my thang as always. Working hard, seeing shows, signings, book launches, museums, galleries, festivals, conventions, award shows, dinners, breakfasts, brunches, drinks, its nuts. I had a date go well recently, which gives me hope! I’ve been meeting so many great girls that I have no interest in, so its good to finally make some actual headway in finding someone who doesn’t make me feel like a singular solitary whack job who thinks differently and can’t find someone with the same psychological mindset as me. Yeah! I think that sometimes. Am I a freak for liking mayonnaise on a nice pork chop sandwich? Some girls make you doubt your sanity. Over a sandwich!

Aiight, hope you like the drawings, I love you.

PS. I have a lot more drawings I’m excited to post, but since they happened this weekend (and aren’t full of writing yet), I’ll post about them later. But for now, I wanna say I saw Chris Rock last night and, man, I’m just checking off my list of comedians I’ve wanted to see left and right!

I was coming back from a late night of mics and shows. Got out my sketchbook to write about it, as I always do. It’s late, like two in the morning on a Monday. I didn’t notice it at first, but when I did I saw I was being photographed. Once he’d been spotted, he apologized, asked for permission. Only if I could get a copy, I responded, or something like that. It was late, i don’t remember exactly what was exchanged.

We chatted a bit, about New York, about Brooklyn, his origin story. His photography was nothing more than a hobby, something I forget that art can be to people. I’ve made it my life, and surrounded myself with people who also share the same feelings. Sure, its scary to talk to strangers at two in the morning, even if we were the only two on the subway platform. But I’ve made it a new hobby of mine.

Riding and writing. More words from my subway rides and NY adventures.

I don’t always limit myself to writing on the subway, or an airplane, or in transit. I do open mics all over Manhattan and I’ll write jokes seconds before doing a 2 minute set. I recently went to one where I met an Asian-Canadian comic. He heard me whisper my name to the host and quickly packed up his gear and followed me to where I was sitting. This usually happens, Asian people gravitating to each other. But as I got to know him, I decided quickly that I was happy to have made a new friend even though he was someone I had absolutely nothing in common with.

His laptop bag was a clear indicator he was a software engineer, and worked from home. He loved going to dance clubs with his Asian group of guy friends in attempts to pick up women. Mostly female Asians that frequent the clubs in short dresses and high heels. He loved Daniel Tosh, Colin Quinn, and an LA comedian KT Tatara, the latter the only I agreed with him on. And later on in the night, his family came out to watch him perform in a basement, performing third to last of 40 comics. By the end of the night, he had lamented that he no longer was the only Vietnamese comedian he knew personally. He was no longer the ‘unicorn’, and that he didn’t feel as special anymore. I agreed, but not for the same reasons he did.

He and I were different. He was completely aware that he was the more stereotypical Asian man of the two of us, and played into it. But still I couldn’t stop myself from enjoying his company. I was fascinated that Asian men like him exist, even in the comedy scene. Though I try to change the perceptions people have about Asian men, these guys are irrevocably content with being stereotypical. And I can’t change that. I just have to accept people for who they are.

Hey there! More and more and more. This time with a couple of horses! Jesus. One horse was drawn at the Metropolitan, on an early Saturday morning. The place wasn’t empty, but the foot traffic was light and bare. I sat on the ground cross legged as little kids came up to me, at a height where we were eye-to-eye. These kids were awesome, entranced by my drawing instead of the armored fleet of horses in front of them. I even had security guards watching over me, allowing me to do this, and watching my back just in case a ninja decided to come alive from the samurai room and off me. And one thing I find funny is that I might be on some tourist’s flickr stream in an album entitled “I LOVE NY”.

I did some tweaks to the other horse on a subway one afternoon. I usually don’t sit while drawing, but I did this time until it got too crowded. A pretty girl sat down and without arm room to draw i got up to my usual spot next to the doors. She had only gotten a glance, but it was enough for her to get up to and follow me, and strike up a conversation. It was then that I found out she was french, in NY just for the summer, and that she wanted to see more of my work and in keep in contact. I obliged, of course, kind of hard not to.

Drawing brings on a different experience out in the world than it does at your desk. New stories are formed, people make bold moves to find out more. And I get something to write about in my sketchbook.
